Official/Family Showcases

Official showcase applications are now CLOSED for the 2020 conference!

Showcases will take place on Friday and Saturday of the conference. Applicants apply online, submitting three songs in MP3 format for consideration. Applicants should also have two photos (high and low resolution), a stage plot, and tech requirements/input list ready to submit with application.

The official showcase jury will meet in mid-May to select 36 official showcase artists and several alternates (who might be asked to fill in if any of the official selections cannot perform at the conference). All applicants will be notified of the selection of official and alternate showcase artists by May 31, 2020.

Artists selected by the showcase jury will perform for artistic directors and presenters from across Canada and around the world, as well as conference delegates, in a 20-25 minute set at the 2019 conference.

The inclusion of a family showcase at the conference is contingent on a minimum of four family showcase applications being received. If this condition is met, a special jury consisting of children aged 6-12 will be convened after the official showcase jury deliberations are completed, and will select two artists/acts and one alternate artist/act. One family showcase artist will perform at the beginning of the official showcases on each of Friday and Saturday evenings.

For more information about the jury process, please read the Folk Music Ontario Official Showcase Goals and Jury Guidelines.

Private Showcases

A Private Showcase is a performance or series of performances in a hotel room on the music floor(s) of the host hotel. It is part of the official activities of the conference. In 2019, ALL private showcases will be ACOUSTIC. Private showcase presenters pay an administrative fee which covers the production and publication of a Private Showcase schedule, the provision of floor monitors on the private showcase floors, and advertising in the Conference Program. Private showcases will take place after the Friday and Saturday official showcases, from 11:30pm – 3:00am. All Private Showcase presenters sign an agreement that includes presenter-specific conference rules. Download the 2019 rules here.

Private showcase hosts book their own lineups. Everyone who presents and/or performs in a private showcase is required to be a registered delegate of the conference. A special Private/Sponsored Showcase rate of $241.30 is offered to private showcase presenters and artists who are members of Folk Music Ontario through September, 2019. At least one member of each band appearing in a private showcase has to be registered for the full conference, and the other members of each band have the choice of also registering for the full conference at the special rate (with Folk Music Ontario membership), or registering as side players at a reduced rate of $152.31, with access to showcases only.

Purchase membership here or log in to renew or extend your membership.

Application Process:

1. Download the application form.

2. Complete and sign the form and send it back with your Visa or MasterCard number. We’ll use that to process your admin payment of $160.00 plus HST, and will pass the number on to the hotel to actually secure your private showcase room.

  • The hotel room rental fee will not be processed until conference time.
  • Preference will be given to FMO members.

Private showcase rooms are only offered as a two-night commitment. You are responsible for paying for the rental of your room for both Friday and Saturday night. Private showcases will take place from 11:30pm-3:00am each of these nights.

3. After your admin payment has been processed and your application approved, you will receive email asking for your checkin/checkout dates, whether you have another hotel room booked, and the names of all people (if any) who are going to be sleeping in the private showcase room.

4. Your room number will be assigned.

5. You will need to provide your complete lineup, with the names of all band members playing in your room, for publication in the FMO Showcase Guide. You’ll also receive a free 1/8th page ad in the Conference Program.

6. You will be responsible for ensuring that everyone who is playing in your private showcase room is registered for the conference. You also need to be registered!

Not interested in hosting a private showcase room, but just want to play in one?

There is no Folk Music Ontario application form to play in private showcases. FMO receives several requests each years from artists and private showcase presenters seeking to connect with each other. All private showcase presenters will be listed below, and those with contact info may still be looking for artists. If you’re interested in performing in private showcases, please contact these presenters directly. Please note that this list will change frequently, as lineups for various rooms fill up. Check the list often!

Sponsored Showcases

Sponsored showcases are presented by various music industry associations and other organizations, such as agencies, record labels, etc. These organizations pay for the opportunity to host a showcase, and by doing so, contributed to Folk Music Ontario’s budget, helping to keep registration costs low for all other conference delegates. Sponsored showcase slots are available on Friday and Saturday at lunchtime (approx. 12:00pm – 2:00pm).

Sponsored showcase hosts book their own lineups. Everyone who presents and/or performs in a sponsored showcase is required to be a registered delegate of the conference. A special Private/Sponsored Showcase rate of $241.30 is offered to sponsored showcase presenters and artists who are members of Folk Music Ontario through September, 2019. At least one member of each band appearing in a sponsored showcase has to be registered for the full conference, and the other members of each band have the choice of also registering for the full conference at the special rate (with Folk Music Ontario membership), or registering as side players at a reduced rate of $152.31, with access to showcases only.

Sponsored showcase hosts are responsible for ensuring that all of the artists performing in their showcase are registered for the conference.
